Yellowing of pillows is a common phenomenon, mainly caused by natural body secretions such as sweat, saliva and skin oils. These substances are absorbed into the fibers of the pillow over time, causing a visible discoloration. Yellowing is exacerbated by humidity, heat and insufficient ventilation, which is why the phenomenon is especially common in summer or humid conditions.
Why does my pillow turn yellow while sleeping?
Yellowing of a pillow begins when body secretions collect on the pillow's surfaces and are absorbed deeper into the material. Sweat contains salts, proteins and fats that react with the pillow's fibers, causing the yellow color. Night sweats in particular accelerate the process, as an adult can lose up to half a liter of fluid during the night.
The skin's natural oils, or sebum, are constantly transferred to the surface of the pillow. These oils oxidize when they react with air, resulting in a yellowish color. The process is similar to how white clothes turn yellow under the arms.
Environmental factors significantly affect the rate of yellowing. High humidity slows down the drying of the cushion, allowing moisture to remain in the material for a longer period of time. In a warm environment, bacterial activity increases, which can worsen discoloration and cause unpleasant odors.
Is the yellow pillow dangerous to your health?
A yellowed pillow is not automatically a health risk, but it can collect dust mites, bacteria and mold spores . A mere change in color is often just a cosmetic problem, but moisture and dirt create a favorable breeding ground for microbes. A yellowed pillow can cause respiratory symptoms, especially for asthmatics and allergy sufferers.
It is worth replacing your pillow when it starts to smell musty despite washing, its shape has permanently changed, or there are spots of mold on the surface. Allergy symptoms such as a stuffy nose, itchy eyes, or a cough in the morning can be signs that your pillow needs to be replaced.
Healthcare professionals recommend replacing your pillow every 1-2 years, depending on use and care. Hotel-grade pillows last longer with professional care and quality materials.
How to prevent the pillow from yellowing from the start?
Protecting your pillow starts with using the right pillowcases and protectors. A waterproof pillowcase prevents moisture and dirt from getting into the pillow itself. A cotton pillowcase absorbs moisture and is easy to wash regularly. Using two covers provides extra protection and allows for changing between washes.
Regular washing and airing are key to preventing yellowing. Pillowcases should be changed at least once a week, preferably twice during the summer. The pillow itself benefits from being aired outside in sunny weather for a few hours once a month.
Optimizing your sleeping environment reduces sweating and moisture build-up. A bedroom temperature of 16-20 degrees and humidity of 40-60% create the best conditions. Breathable materials in both the pillow and bedding improve air circulation.
Can a yellowed pillow be saved or should it be thrown away?
Cleaning the cushion is possible if the yellowing is superficial and there is no mold on the cushion. Effective cleaning begins with pre-treatment: mix baking soda and water to make a paste, apply to the yellowed areas and leave for 30 minutes. Then wash in the hottest washing machine cycle that the material can withstand.
Different materials require different treatment. Synthetic fiber-filled pillows can usually withstand a 60-degree wash. Down and feathers are washed at 40 degrees with a gentle detergent. Shaped pillows and foams are cleaned superficially, as they are not machine washable.
The pillow should be replaced when washing no longer helps, the filling has become permanently lumpy or there are visible spots of mold on the pillow. High-quality hotel standard pillows withstand intensive use and washing better than regular consumer pillows. You can explore our selection in our Helsinki showroom !
