How to choose the right-sized fitted sheet? Tips from Sisustus1.fi

The bed is made, the duvet cover is straight, and the pillows are fluffed. All that's left is the final touch: the fitted sheet. And then the struggle begins. Either the sheet pops off the corners during the night, or it bunches up uncomfortably beneath you. Sound familiar?

This is one of the most common bedroom woes, but luckily, it's easily avoidable. Choosing the right size is simple, as long as you know what to measure. We'll tell you how to succeed.

Why is the right size so important?

A wrong-sized fitted sheet isn't just an aesthetic flaw; it directly impairs your sleep quality.

A sheet that's too small will pull on the mattress, stretch its elastic bands, and eventually pop off a corner in the middle of the night. Nobody wants to wake up fighting to put the sheet back in place.

One that's too large is almost as annoying. The excess fabric gathers on top of the mattress in uncomfortable wrinkles that rub against your skin. It's simply better to sleep on a smooth and taut surface.

How do I correctly measure my bed for a fitted sheet?

This is where precision pays off. You only need a tape measure and a moment of your time.

Width and Length – Getting the Basic Measurements Right

Start with the easiest: measure the width and length of your mattress from edge to edge on top. The most common bed widths in Finland are 80, 90, 120, 160, and 180 cm, and the length is almost always 200 cm. These measurements directly correspond to the sheet's size label, such as 160x200 cm.

Mattress Thickness – The Most Common Mistake When Choosing a Sheet

After width and length comes the most important, but often overlooked, measurement: mattress thickness. Width and length measurements alone do not guarantee a good fit. The height of the mattress determines how deep, or high-sided, a sheet you need.

The depth stated on the sheet's packaging indicates which mattress thickness it suits. The rule of thumb is simple: the sheet's depth must be greater than the mattress's thickness so that there's enough fabric to tuck under the mattress, keeping the sheet snug and in place.

How does a mattress topper affect measurements?

A separate mattress topper requires its own consideration. Here are the two most common and effective approaches:

  1. Two separate sheets: You can make the bed with a thinner fitted sheet just for the mattress topper, and another for the actual mattress. This is a neat, but slightly more laborious, solution.
  2. One deep sheet: This is our recommendation for a polished, hotel-style bed. In this case, measure the combined height of the divan bed and the mattress topper. For example, if you have a 25 cm thick divan bed and an 8 cm thick mattress topper, the total height is 33 cm. You'll need a sheet with enough depth to cover the entire assembly and tuck neatly under the mattresses.

Our Hotel Luxus series sheets offer ample depth, specifically designed for thicker mattress sets.

Measure the layers the sheet will cover

First decide whether the fitted sheet will cover only the topper or several layers. Measure that combination's width, length and height with the mattress protector in place. Compare the height with the sheet's stated fitting range rather than choosing by bed width alone.

Also consider the impact of material on fit

The material also affects the fit of the sheet. Non-stretch fabric is less forgiving of measurement errors than stretchy fabric.

For example, tightly woven cotton sateen, which we use in many of our pillowcases and duvet covers, is luxuriously smooth but does not stretch much. Linen, on the other hand, is naturally more relaxed and adaptable.

Also remember that natural fibers, such as cotton and linen, shrink slightly in the first wash. This has been taken into account in the sizing of quality sheets, so don't be alarmed if a new sheet feels a little loose at first.

Finding the right size is ultimately simple: in addition to width and length, remember to also measure the HEIGHT of the mattress. When you choose the right size and quality sheet, you are investing directly in better sleep and a tidy bedroom. Explore our selection and find a suitable fitted sheet for your bed.

Frequently asked questions

1. Can I use a fitted sheet that is too big?

Yes, it can, but it is not recommended. A fitted sheet that is too large will wrinkle and move during sleep, which feels uncomfortable. You can try to tighten the excess fabric under the mattress with sheet straps, but the easiest way is to choose the correct size from the start. This will save you from constantly smoothing out the bed and ensure better sleep.

2. What should I do if my fitted sheet shrinks too much in the wash?

A slight shrinkage of natural fibers, such as cotton, during the first washes is normal, and this has been taken into account in the sizing of quality fitted sheets. However, if the sheet shrinks to an unusable extent, it was likely washed at too high a temperature. Always check and follow the washing instructions to ensure your fitted sheet retains its size and remains in good condition for a long time.

3. What is the best material for a fitted sheet?

There isn't one right answer, as the best material depends on your personal preferences. Cotton sateen is luxuriously smooth and cool to the touch. Linen is a breathable and relaxed choice that softens and improves with use. Percale cotton, on the other hand, is known for its crisp and fresh feel. It's worth trying different materials to find your favorite.

4. How does a fitted sheet differ from a regular flat sheet?

A fitted sheet has elastic bands at the corners, which keeps it snugly around the mattress. It is easy to make the bed with and stays well in place. A regular flat sheet is a rectangular piece of fabric without elastic bands, which is manually folded under the mattress. For most people, a fitted sheet is currently the most effortless and neat option.

5. How often should a fitted sheet be changed?

For good hygiene, a fitted sheet should be changed regularly, like other bedding, about every 1–2 weeks. If you sweat a lot or have pets sleeping in the bed, a more frequent change is in order. Clean sheets improve sleeping comfort and promote better sleep.
