A well-fitting sheet stays in place and makes a bed look tidy. Start with the mattress's width, length and depth, and decide whether you prefer a fitted or flat sheet. When size and feel suit your bed, the sheet is comfortable to use and easy to put on.
How do you choose the right sheet size?
Measure the width and length of the mattress or topper that the sheet will fit around. The third important measurement is the depth of that layer. A fitted sheet's sides must be deep enough to cover it and tuck underneath.
If the sheet goes around the topper only, measure the topper. If it goes around both mattress and topper, measure their combined depth. Do not use the height of the whole bed. Compare your measurements with the product's stated fit. A flat sheet also needs enough extra width and length to tuck under the edges.
A sheet that is too small can pull off the corners, while one that is too large can bunch beneath you. The correct size is a simple way to improve everyday comfort.
Allow for tucking in a flat sheet
When choosing a flat sheet, consider how much fabric you want to tuck under the mattress at the sides and ends. Compare your mattress measurements with a sheet that already works well. For a fitted sheet, check the stated mattress-height range instead.
Sheet fabrics: which suits you?
Fabric affects how the bed feels. A warm sleeper may prefer a different surface from someone who feels cold easily, so choose according to your own needs.
Cotton sateen: a smooth hotel feel
Cotton sateen's smooth surface and subtle sheen bring a hotel feel to the bed. It feels soft and drapes beautifully. Check the sheet's own wash temperature and dimensions; sateen fabrics are not all the same. Choose cotton sateen if you appreciate a smooth surface and neatly finished bedding.
Linen: natural texture for an airy feel
Linen has a distinctive natural texture and absorbs moisture. It may appeal to someone looking for an airy, relaxed feel. The surface can feel firm when new but softens with use and washing. Natural creasing is part of linen's character.
Silk: a gentle-feeling surface
Silk is a smooth natural material valued for its soft surface and temperature-balancing feel. The Butterfly Silk of Copenhagen flat sheet is made from mulberry silk, in which dust mites do not thrive according to the product information. Choose silk if you enjoy a gentle surface and are happy to follow its care instructions. Silk pillowcases and duvet covers complete the combination.
Everyday cotton: a versatile choice
Cotton is a versatile everyday option, with a feel that varies according to weave and finishing. Compare size, care instructions and texture against your needs. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 indicates testing for harmful substances against the standard's limits; it does not mean chemical-free.
Sheet care: helping your bedding last
Correct care can keep a quality sheet useful for years. A few habits help preserve the fabric and fit.
Before first use: Follow the new sheet's preparation instructions. Washing before use can soften the fabric and help establish the final fit where shrinkage has been allowed for. Use the temperature specified for the sheet.
Choose the correct wash temperature: Many cotton sheets tolerate 60 °C, but always check the product. The Butterfly Silk of Copenhagen flat sheet is gently washed at 30–40 °C with enzyme-free silk detergent. For waterproof sheets, the membrane and other materials influence care.
Skip fabric softener: Fabric softener can reduce absorbency, particularly in linen and other natural fibres.
Consider air drying: Air drying suits many sheets. If using a tumble dryer, confirm that the label permits it and choose the appropriate temperature. The Butterfly Silk of Copenhagen silk sheet cannot be tumble dried. Straighten the sheet before hanging it and, where tumble drying is allowed, remove it promptly to reduce creases.
Folding a fitted sheet need not be difficult: fold it in half and tuck the corners into one another. Repeat on the other side, then fold the resulting rectangle neatly.
Remember mattress protection
An ordinary sheet is not a waterproof barrier. A Dream On mattress protector, for example, protects against liquids, dirt and dust mites and is used beneath a regular sheet. Choose the protector's size and permitted mattress depth according to the product information.
A mattress protector is a small, practical addition that helps keep your bed fresh and hygienic. It belongs alongside well-chosen pillows and suitable duvets. Some waterproof products, such as a Respira sheet, also serve directly as the bottom sheet. Check the intended use: a separate protector and a waterproof sheet are different solutions.
Frequently asked questions: how often should a sheet be changed?
Changing sheets every two weeks is a useful starting point. If you perspire heavily, have allergies or share the bed with a pet, weekly changes may suit you better. Adjust to need and keep your bedding clean.
Why does my fitted sheet keep slipping off?
An incorrect fit is a common cause: the sides may be too shallow to tuck properly beneath the mattress. Stretched elastic can also be responsible. Check both the sheet's stated depth range and the condition of its elastic.
What is thread count, and does it matter?
TC describes the combined number of warp and weft threads per square inch of woven fabric. It indicates density but does not alone determine quality or softness. Fibre quality, weave and finishing matter too. It is not a directly comparable measure for a knitted jersey sheet.
Can I iron a sheet?
Iron only if the product's care instructions permit it. Cotton and linen can often be ironed at a suitable temperature, and slightly damp fabric is easier to smooth. Do not iron a waterproof sheet or protector according to ordinary cotton-sheet instructions: its membrane could be damaged. Always check the specific product's ironing symbol.
