Which sofa fabric works with cats and dogs?
We particularly recommend Vogue and Sawana for homes with pets. A dense, even, loop-free surface is a practical starting point when you want to reduce trapped hair and the risk of claws catching. Short-pile, velvet-like Vogue and woven Sawana offer two different looks. In a home with dogs, consider mud, sand and damp paws too, and choose a colour that works with your pet’s coat.
Cat claws can catch in the loops of plush, textured fabrics and pull threads out. A looped bouclé such as Loop is therefore not our first recommendation for a cat that scratches furniture. Feel the yarn structure of other plush fabrics too. Not every fluffy-looking fabric has loops: appearance and actual construction are different things.
SIC includes Vogue in its Pet-Proof collection, which has been tested for resistance to snagging. That makes it a well-founded option to compare for pet households. The designation is not a guarantee against claws or determined scratching. Suitable scratching areas, claw care and, where helpful, a washable protective throw remain part of the solution.
Which upholstery fabric is easiest to clean?
If easy cleaning is your priority, compare smooth or low-texture, densely constructed fabrics. Crumbs, dust, grit and hair can accumulate between pronounced yarns, ribs and loops. Plush Capri or Venecia may be beautiful in a room, but a textured appearance does not automatically make a fabric the easiest choice for a busy, messy household.
Vacuum with a soft upholstery attachment and suitable suction. Remove loose dirt before damp cleaning, blot spills without rubbing and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when testing a cleaner on a hidden area. Easy Clean describes a cleaning-related feature; water repellency slows liquid absorption. Neither means every stain will disappear or that the whole cover can go in a washing machine.

What do Martindale, fibre content and texture tell you?
A Martindale result measures abrasion resistance under a specified laboratory test. It does not, by itself, predict service life, ease of cleaning, resistance to cat claws or comfort. The Association for Contract Textiles explains that a high test result cannot be converted directly into years of furniture use.
Composition identifies the fibres; construction creates the surface. Two polyester fabrics can therefore feel very different: Vogue is velvety, Loop has loops and Sawana has a woven appearance. Fibre content alone is not a quality ranking. Also consider pilling, lightfastness, care instructions and how the fabric lies around corners and seams.

Commercial upholstery quality is assessed through tested properties: abrasion resistance matters alongside pilling, seam performance and colour retention. Any separate fire-safety requirements for a project must be checked for the specific fabric and finished furniture.
Why is polyester popular in quality upholstery?
Polyester is a popular material for quality upholstery because it combines wear resistance, shape retention and easy care. Most fabrics in this guide are polyester or polyester blends. The fibre can create velvety, woven and plush surfaces, so practicality leaves plenty of room for your preferred look.
Upholstery manufacturer Gabriel highlights polyester’s durability, lightfastness, and ability to retain colour and shape. Bemz’s fabric guide also points to easy care, wrinkle resistance and quick drying. These qualities are particularly useful for a sofa used every day.
Compared with cotton and linen, polyester often offers less creasing and easier everyday care. A densely constructed polyester upholstery designed for commercial use can be highly resistant to wear. Fibre content alone, however, does not establish which of two fabrics will last longer: high-quality, durable upholstery is also made from cotton and linen. Only if both the fabric and the finished furniture cover’s care instructions allow it. A removable cover is not automatically washable. Check temperature, drying and refitting instructions before washing.
