A welcoming hotel bed comes from neat bed-making, thoughtful layers and comfortable materials. You can create the same atmosphere at home with a few familiar steps. Five minutes is a guide for an everyday routine; changing the linen or learning a new technique may take longer.
Start with the right bedding and preparation
Before you begin, check the size and condition of your bedding. Correctly sized sheets make neat bed-making easier. A hotel-style result rests on four elements.
-
The mattress and its protection: Choose a mattress protector that fits. A washable protector makes the bed easier to keep clean. Whether a sheet stays in place also depends on its dimensions, fitting method and materials.
-
Sheets: Choose the right size and allow for the mattress height. A fitted sheet makes bed-making straightforward, while a generously sized flat sheet can be tucked under the mattress. The Hotel flat sheet, for example, is a cotton-polyester blend designed for professional use, offering easy ironing, wash durability and a feel that softens with use. Smooth sateen and crisp percale offer other options for the surface feel. Explore duvet covers and pillowcases.
-
Duvet and pillows: Fullness helps create the look. Hotels often use airy duvets that drape attractively. Layering pillows of different sizes and thicknesses adds visual interest to the bed. One arrangement for a double bed is four pillows, with two firmer pillows at the back and two softer ones in front.
-
Finishing touches: A bedspread or a throw folded at the foot of the bed completes the arrangement. It adds depth, colour and texture and covers the bedding during the day.
Step by step: a five-minute bed-making routine
With your bedding ready, the process becomes straightforward. The timings below are estimates. You can skip changing the duvet cover when making the bed each day.
Step 1: Clear the bed (about 30 seconds). Put the pillows and duvet on a clean chair or another suitable surface. This makes it easy to smooth out the sheet.
Step 2: Smooth and tuck the sheet (about 30 seconds). Pull the fitted-sheet corners over the mattress corners and smooth the creases by hand. With a flat sheet, tuck the foot end under the mattress, lift a triangular section at the side, tuck the straight section below it underneath, then lower the triangle and tuck it in. This corner fold helps keep the sheet neat.
Step 3: Change the duvet cover using the roll method if needed (about 2 minutes). Turn the cover inside out and spread it on the bed with the opening at the foot. Lay the duvet on top, matching the corners. Roll both together from the closed end towards the opening. Turn the opening over the ends of the roll, fasten any closure and carefully unroll it. Straighten the corners. Whether this works well depends on the cover’s opening; hand openings at the upper corners can also help with the usual method.
Step 4: Arrange the duvet and pillows (about 1 minute). Spread out the duvet and leave, for example, 30–40 cm at the top for pillows. Fold the upper edge back once or twice. Fluff the pillows and place larger 60 × 80 cm Hotel Luxus pillows at the back, with smaller pillows in front.
Step 5: Finish (about 30 seconds). Add a bedspread or fold a throw at the foot of the bed. Straighten the edges and check the overall arrangement.
What makes a hotel bed look and feel inviting?
Beyond the practical technique, a few visual choices and material details help create a hotel atmosphere at home.
Layers create a sense of luxury. Different pillow sizes, a folded duvet and a bedspread give the bed depth. Choose the number of layers to suit your preferences and move extra decorative pillows aside at bedtime.
White creates a fresh impression. Coordinated light-coloured bedding provides a calm backdrop for the room. Cleanliness comes from washing and care, however, rather than colour.
Materials and care affect durability. Bedding designed for hotel use emphasises resistance to repeated washing and easy finishing. Choose a material you enjoy and follow its care instructions so the bed looks neat and feels comfortable.
Separate daily bed-making from changing linen
Have clean replacement textiles ready before changing the sheets. On an ordinary morning, focus on straightening and arranging the existing layers. Separating the tasks makes the routine more manageable without letting a speed target determine the entire laundry schedule.
