Continental bed or sprung divan? A practical comparison

The main difference between a continental bed and a sprung divan bed is their construction. A continental bed has a separate sprung mattress and topper above its base. In a sprung divan, the springs are built into the base itself, with a topper chosen to go on top. The number of spring layers and the feel vary in both types: the name alone does not establish softness or quality. The right choice suits your body, sleeping habits and budget.

What is a continental bed?

A continental bed generally combines three components. This tall, upholstered arrangement is familiar from hotel bedrooms.

  • Base: this may be sprung or unsprung. A wide double bed often has two base sections. A sprung base adds flexibility, while an unsprung base may give a firmer feel.

  • Main mattress: a separate sprung mattress, often pocket-sprung, responds to the sleeper's weight. A wide mattress may contain one or two spring cores inside a shared cover.

  • Topper: the uppermost layer finishes the surface feel and influences softness, contouring and perceived warmth.

For example, Hotel Luxus Jenkki 2 has a Bonnell-sprung base beneath a pocket-sprung mattress. Not every continental bed has two spring layers, however: a model with an unsprung base can look similar and feel different.

What is a sprung divan bed?

In this Scandinavian-style construction, known in Finnish as a runkopatja, the springs and wooden frame form one unit with legs attached to it. A topper is chosen separately. The structure can be simple, but it can also contain more than one spring layer.

The Hotel Luxus Multipocket sprung divan has a lower Bonnell layer and an upper Multipocket layer with 500 springs per square metre. It is therefore a double-sprung divan, not a continental bed. This shows why it is worth checking each model's construction.

A sprung divan can look less bulky than a continental bed and is often less expensive. Two bases placed side by side with a shared topper can form a double bed. How noticeable the centre join feels depends on the mattresses, edges and topper, so try it for yourself.

Continental bed or sprung divan: which suits you?

Sleeping comfort and support

What matters is how the complete bed works beneath your body. A side sleeper needs room for the shoulder and hip as well as support around the waist. A back sleeper needs balanced support without uncomfortable pressure points. Either bed type can meet these needs.

A sprung base can add flexibility, but spring firmness, padding and topper work together. A sprung divan is not automatically hard, and a continental bed is not automatically soft. Bed type alone does not resolve back or shoulder pain either.

Comfort for two sleepers

A continental bed's shared main mattress and topper can make the centre feel more even. Designs vary, so the name alone cannot guarantee an imperceptible join or complete isolation from a partner's movements.

With two sprung divans, you can choose firmness separately for each side. Many continental beds offer this too: Jenkki 2, for example, allows different firmness levels on the two sides at no extra charge. If possible, try a double bed together.

Appearance and budget

A continental bed offers a substantial, hotel-style appearance and often a high sleeping surface. A sprung divan can suit pared-back interiors and smaller rooms. Compare overall dimensions, though: the legs and topper have a considerable effect on height.

When comparing prices, check whether legs, a topper and your chosen fabric are included. The Hotel Luxus Multipocket sprung divan includes legs, for example, while the topper is selected separately. A less expensive base can leave room in the budget for your preferred topper or duvet.

The topper matters with either bed type

The topper is the mattress layer closest to your body. It refines the feel but cannot remedy an unsuitable or worn-out spring system. Always try it with your chosen bed.

  • Memory foam: responds to heat and pressure. The Hotel Luxus Memoryfoam topper is 7 cm thick and comes in different firmness levels. The Soft version is used in Lapland Hotels' city hotels. Its contouring feel may suit different sleeping positions, but suitability is individual.

  • Latex: usually feels resilient and responds quickly as you move. Latex type, thickness and cover all affect the feel.

  • HR foam, or high-resilience foam: offers another responsive option. The Hotel Luxus HR35 topper has a softer-feeling profiled side and a firmer-feeling flat side.

Keep the topper clean according to the manufacturer's instructions. Check separately whether its cover is removable and washable. Assess replacement by support, indentations, recovery and hygiene rather than a fixed number of years for every product.

When should you choose each type?

A sprung divan may suit you if

  • you want straightforward construction and the freedom to choose a topper separately

  • you prefer a lighter visual style or are furnishing a small bedroom

  • you are building a bed within a particular budget

  • you want a single bed or two independently chosen halves.

A continental bed may suit you if

  • you like layered construction and a hotel-style appearance

  • you want a shared main mattress and topper for a double bed

  • you prefer a taller bed with an overall height that suits you

  • you want to compare the flexibility of different bases and the firmness of the main mattress.

Frequently asked questions

Can you adjust a bed's firmness?

Spring firmness is usually chosen when ordering from the model's available options. A topper can change the surface feel later, but does not change the spring system underneath. Labels such as Medium and Hard are not a uniform scale across different models.

How long does a continental or sprung divan bed last?

Lifespan depends on construction, load and care. Regularly check whether the mattresses recover their shape, whether there are lasting indentations and whether the bed still feels comfortably supportive. Read the manufacturer's warranty and care instructions too; warranty length and product lifespan are different things.

Is a higher bed always better?

No. A suitable bed is easy to get out of and lets you sit on the edge with your feet firmly on the floor. Try the complete height with your chosen legs and topper. A tall continental bed and a lower sprung divan can each be right for different people.

Record the complete bed you tried

Record the whole combination you tested: base, mattress, selected firmness, topper and legs. Ask for these to be listed separately in the quotation too. If you choose a different topper or leg height for the order, check the affected features again, such as surface feel or overall height.
